i03: Odivelas-Loures Overground Light Railway (250 M€)

The northwest periphery of Lisbon is home to a significant number of people who work or study in the capital and need to commute, mostly by private transport because of a lack of alternatives. It is therefore important to build a more efficient, attractive and environmentally-sustainable public transport supply, promoting a reduction in dependence on private transport and contributing to a reduction of GHG emissions.

The solution recommended for this investment, justified by the demand, is Light Rail Transit (LRT). This is a system that uses a lighter rolling stock than the railway, operating on a platform segregated from the rest of traffic, with reserved lanes. These characteristics allow the provision of this form of transport in a shorter period of time due to its faster execution and lower investment and operating costs.

The line, to be built by Metropolitano de Lisboa, EPE, will connect Loures with the Metropolitano de Lisboa network at Odivelas over a distance of 12 km, making up for the lack of high-capacity transport in this suburban demand corridor. Due to its impact on the quality of service provided, this investment will attract passengers who normally use private transport and will contribute to decarbonisation and the transport sector’s energy and climate transition.
